As you enter Gru house there are a few rules you should know, because clearly rules need to be set. Rule number one: You will not touch anything. Rule number two: You will not bother me while I’m working. Rule number three: You will not cry, or whine, or laugh, or giggle, or sneeze or barf or fart! So no, no, no annoying sounds. All right?

The Despicable Me movie set comes to life in this attraction. If you aren’t familiar with the movies, you will be fine. Very briefly Gru is a self-styled master villain and “scourge of humanity” who, deep down, really isn’t all that despicable. Especially when Gru’s has adopted three adorable sisters who constantly expose his kind heart side.

Despite his newfound fatherhood role, Gru forges ahead with his world-domination schemes with the help of his army minions. These are bright yellow, slapstick-prone, capsule-shaped sidekicks creatures that can be crude and cuddly all at the same time, who love to eat bananas. Just think minions are like the Three Stooges on steroids. This is where you come in, because it seems as though Gru has moved his headquarters to Orlando and needs to boost his battalion of minions for his latest nefarious plot. Will you step inside Gru’s home and become one his recruits to forge his world-domination plan?

Making your way through the queue line you will notice many banana trees and, overhead monitors lay the groundwork for the minion recruitment. Guests first enter Gru’s living room, the first of two pre-shows. Gru barks menacing commands; his daughters deflate the rants by assuring guest “He’s just a big, bald teddy bear,” and the minions engage in pratfalls and clowning. You the enlistee now will move to Gru’s lab, and the second pre-show. Enormous video monitors depict his wobbly plan to convert humans into minions. There are a few surprises in the lab area that will leave you breathless. Once enlistees have been properly briefed in the art of donning minion goggles (3D glasses) and other prerequisites, you now move into the main theater and take your seats in the “transformation pods.” The action begins with the newly altered minions (that’s us) being challenged with a series of insane tests such as evading giant fly swatters.

The stunning technology allows new recruits to engage in the attraction with the life like images. Wait, because once you have finished the ride there is more! A dance party to the tune of “Boogie Fever” allows recruits to get their groove on with some special guest.
